Top 3 Tips for Finding Your Dream Wedding Photographer!
Hey there, friend! Are you currently searching for a wedding photographer to capture your day? Well, hopefully this article will be useful to you. Here are my top tips for finding your dream wedding photographer in Edinburgh, and across the world:
Tip #1 - Find someone who is reliable and professional
I can’t stress this enough. Your dream photographer is only your dream photographer if your images are kept safe! But how can you tell? Well, the easiest way is to hop on a call with them and ask. Ask them about their security measures, ask them about their insurance, check out their reviews if they have some. I’ve written more about this in another blog article: How much does a Wedding Photographer cost? — FOLKSTORIE (folkstoriephotography.com)
Tip #2 - Find someone in your price range
This one is probably something you’re very aware of, since we all know how expensive weddings can be! The good thing is, it’s generally straight-forward to find out who is, and isn’t, in your price range. Asking for package guides or hopping on a quick call to chat prices is pretty easy to do, and remember, it may be possible to get a good deal with a photographer simply by going on a call with them. It’s worth a shot, right? If you naturally have a good rapport with someone, they’re likely to want to book you - you’re an ideal client. So give it a bash, you won’t lose anything by trying.
A quick story: I remember chatting to my friends after my own wedding about the costs of the day. They were taken aback at how much we paid for our photography (which was actually very cheap for what it was at the time). Phoebe, my wife, and I didn’t regret booking those photographers AT ALL. Even if it seemed like a lot at the time, the memories we have preserved forever in a beautiful style and gallery are so worth it. I know people who regret not booking a professional photographer for their day, they wish they could go back and have the day captured properly so they can relive it. However, I have not once spoken to someone who regretted paying for an experienced professional. Not once, and I mean that. I’m not saying it’s NEVER happened, but it’s a rare occurrence.

Tip #3 - Find someone that matches your style
This is the exciting part, right? Well it’s also important. But mostly exciting… You need to find someone that suits your own style. You’re probably doing this subconsciously, without even thinking about it. Your eyes are naturally drawn to certain colours, styles, lighting situations, and compositions.
For example, I try to shoot in an honest, cinematic style. This means, like many other modern photographers, I’m not huge on posing couples and keeping them dead still for ages. I like movement, and I’m looking for the most cinematic way of capturing your day and your relationship! That’s not to say I won’t give some light direction if you both feel lost, but I prefer to keep things as natural as possible. I LOVE Scotland, natural light, cinema and film, and I try to incorporate that into as much as possible while still keeping you both as the main characters of the story. That’s MY style, that’s how I love to shoot and work. But what about you? Does that fit in with your ideals and colour themes? These are important questions.
You might prefer a much more journalistic, traditional style of photography that preserves your day precisely as it was. Do you prefer candid or posed photography? Do you prefer flash photography, or more natural light? Some photographers might be exclusively natural light, others may use flash at every opportunity. Take a minute to think about what you like in an image and try to match that with your photographer!
Make sure you sit down together and have a good think about what you both want, what you’re both willing to spend, what your style is, and then go for it!
Well folks, that’s my top 3 tips for choosing your dream wedding photographer in Edinburgh. I hope it helped, even a little bit! Don’t be afraid to get in touch with photographers and ask them questions, I promise that most will be super excited that you’re getting in touch and are passionate about their business! I know that, personally, you can’t shut me up once I’ve started talking about cameras and my business… My poor, patient wife can confirm.
